Everything you need to know: Anemones
Ranunculus flowers are typically available from December through to April, but you can start to see them as early as October. You can expect to see ranunculus in your boxes in the Spring months. Some varieties are much more hardy than others, but like most flowers they generally require the same level of conditioning. Anemone’s are phototropic, which means they grow toward a light source. They have a hollow stem so they like lots of water.
They come in various colours such as whites, purples, fuschias, pinks, blues and reds.
How they arrive
Anemone’s arrive in bunches of 50.
They arrive with a weed-like collar around the neck of the flower but generally the stem arrives quite clean. The flower heads will most likely arrive closed, you can leave them in sunlight until they open, but make sure to move them out once they have.
How to condition
Carefully unwrap the flower, stem by stem. Place in a large vase or bucket of water, ensuring they are kept upright. Anemone’s grow quite curved.
Anemone’s drink lots of water, so ensure the container has lots, at all time.
Slight discolouration on the petals of anemones is very normal as the petals are so delicate.
Snip the stem at an angle as usual. You can leave the collar on or you can remove them, this is personal preference, we prefer to remove them.
Wastage is typically higher with anemone’s due who the delicate nature of the flowers.
Varieties
Cut flower varieties are more limited to locally grown, the most popular varieties include: Mistral and Fullstar.
