DIY Wedding Flowers: Is It Right For Me?

We answer some of the key questions you should ask yourself before considering whether making your own wedding flowers is for you.

How easy is it to make your own wedding flowers?

We’ve made it as easy as possible to follow. Our videos are simple and a great beginners guide to floristry. Our tutorials are not designed for florists, we’re not trying to encourage you to create wild and intricate designs (unless that is what you want!). This is about creating beautiful, simple designs, whilst not spending thousands of pounds.

Are DIY wedding flowers cheaper?

We estimate you will save approximately twice if not three times the amount you would spend with a professional florist.

It’s important to remember, most florists will insist on minimum spends of £1.5 to £2k (if not more) due to not only the material costs, but labour, travel, rental costs etc. So if you’re only looking to spend £500 to £1k you will struggle to hire a professional florist who can provide the flowers for this amount. Stem Story is the perfect solution.

How far in advance should you order DIY wedding flowers?

This depends on a few factors:

  • How many boxes you order

  • What you want to make

  • How many people you have to help

  • How confident you are with flower arranging

Here is a general guide, but please bear in mind, this may vary and everyone is different. Always assume you need more people and more time, so that you do not feel stressed - this is the last thing we want you to feel! Make sure you familiarise yourself with the steps required before your flowers arrive and have everything ready and prepared.

Per box we recommend:

Day 1 Two people, one morning

Day 2 Two/three people, one day

How many flowers should I order?

Use our flower calculator to work out how many boxes you might need. This is just a guide so do consider allowing for extras. Contact our flower team for any recommendations of arrangement styles we have not listed.

What will one box get me?

As a guide, one floral-only box will allow you to create approximately:

  • 1 bridal bouquet

  • 5 bridesmaid bouquets

  • 5 buttonholes

  • 10 to 15 small to medium bud vases.

I want to make something which you don’t have a video tutorial for, can you help me?

Please contact our professional floral team, and we can give you our best recommendations on how to approach certain designs.

Also consider using our ‘Hire a Virtual Florist’ service, which you can book for a few hours, the day of your wedding prep. They can advise you on how to make things by guiding you through, step-by-step.
